Tell us about your career to date?

Having trained in University College Dublin, I moved to work in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where I worked as a junior physiotherapist. After two years, on a working holiday visa I worked in Sydney and Tasmania before returning to the the UK for 6 months to work in the cardiac care unit at the Leeds General Infirmary.  Still feeling I wanted to see more of the world I returned to the southern hemisphere to work within the Maori Community in Auckland, New Zealand where I made a decision to begin my specialisation in cardiac rehabilitation.  After a year I returned to Liverpool in the UK for a short while prior to returning to Ireland to start a 13 year period working as a senior in cardiac rehabilitation in St. Vincent's University Hospital.  In 2012 Heart 2 Heart was born and run on a part time basis.  As it began to grow I decided to pursue it on a full time basis in November 2014.

What do you like most about your job?

Each day is different, with new challenges.  The greatest thing is to see patients progress and start to return to a better life after their cardiac event.

Tell us about the types of patient groups you treat?

I treat patients who are at risk if a heart event; those with high blood pressure, diabetic, high cholesterol, low levels of activity, are smokers or are over weight. In addition to this I look after patients who have had a heart event. They may have had a heart attack, heart surgery, stenting, have heart failure, have had a pacemaker inserted. The aim is to help them recover from their cardiac event and also to start changing their risk factors to reduce their risk of having another cardiac event.

What courses/classes do you run?

Classes take place in

  • Mount Merrion Community Centre on Monday afternoons,
  • Medfit, Blackrock, Dublin, Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Killashee Leisure Centre, Naas on Wednesday afternoons

How have you found using TickerFit beneficial when working with your patients?

TickerFit has enabled me to work remotely with patients.  While they have weekly training sessions their home exercise  programme can be monitored closely identifying areas for improvement and the requirement to be reviewed by a health professional where necessary.  It is quick and easy to use with good visual and trend information.

Have your patients enjoyed using TickerFit during their programme?

They have found it to be a good motivational tool with the comfort of having a health professional monitoring them during all stages of their rehabilitation.
